The California Department of Education (CDE) Nutrition Services Division (NSD) is pleased to announce a new way to contact the NSD with questions regarding the California competitive foods and beverages requirements. You can now e-mail your competitive foods and beverages questions directly to COMPETITIVEFOODS@cde.ca.gov.

Updated Smart Snacks in School Questions and Answers

On March 31, 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued Policy Memorandum SP 23-2015 (V.3): Questions and Answers Related to the “Smart Snacks” Interim Final Rule. To view this Policy Memo, please visit the USDA School Meals Policy Web page at http://www.fns.usda.gov/school-meals/policy.

The USDA Policy Memo provides an updated series of questions and answers related to the federal Smart Snacks in School rule. The USDA states that it will update this memorandum as additional questions arise. Updated or new questions are identified with three asterisks (***).

The California Department of Education (CDE) will address these questions and answers in an upcoming Management Bulletin and integrate them into the upcoming Frequently Asked Questions on the CDE Competitive Foods and Beverages Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/he/compfoods.asp.

Dairy Council of California

For nearly a century , the Dairy Council of California has served as the dairy industry’s contribution to community health, providing balanced nutrition education programs and resources that improve eating habits. We teach the value of Milk and Milk products in the context of a total diet. We offer comprehensive nutrition education curriculum and programs that focus on balance, variety and inclusion. California Department of Education- Nutrition Services

The California Department of Education (CDE) provides leadership on and support of nutrition services to enhance the health, well-being, development, and educational potential of California’s children, adults, and families. The State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, has initiated the Team California for Healthy Kids campaign to promote good eating habits and physical activity throughout the day, every day, in schools, before and after school programs, childcare programs and communities. The campaign will focus on making healthy choices the easy choices.

Tom Torlakson has unveiled his Blueprint for Great Schools which includes recommendations to improve nutrition and physical activity in schools.

USDA Nondiscrimination Statement
